| حَدَّثَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا اللَّيْثُ ، عَنْ يَزِيدَ بْنِ أَبِي حَبِيبٍ ، أَنَّ عِرَاكَ بْنَ مَالِكٍ حَدَّثَهُ ، أَنَّ عُرْوَةَ أَخْبَرَهُ ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا ، ” أَنَّ قُرَيْشًا كَانَتْ تَصُومُ يَوْمَ عَاشُورَاءَ فِي الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ ، ثُمَّ أَمَرَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِصِيَامِهِ حَتَّى فُرِضَ رَمَضَانُ ، وَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : مَنْ شَاءَ فَلْيَصُمْهُ ، وَمَنْ شَاءَ أَفْطَرَ ” . |

| ´ہم سے قتیبہ نے بیان کیا، انہوں نے کہا ہم سے لیث نے بیان کیا، ان سے یزید بن ابی حبیب نے اور ان سے عراک بن مالک نے بیان کیا، انہیں عروہ نے خبر دی کہ` ام المؤمنین عائشہ رضی اللہ عنہا نے فرمایا قریش زمانہ جاہلیت میں عاشورہ کا روزہ رکھتے تھے، پھر رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے بھی اس دن روزہ کا حکم دیا یہاں تک کہ رمضان کے روزے فرض ہو گئے، پھر رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا کہ جس کا جی چاہے یوم عاشورہ کا روزہ رکھے اور جس کا جی چاہے نہ رکھے۔ |

| Narrated `Aisha: (The tribe of) Quraish used to fast on the day of Ashura’ in the Pre-Islamic period, and then Allah’s Apostle ordered (Muslims) to fast on it till the fasting in the month of Ramadan was prescribed; whereupon the Prophet said, “He who wants to fast (on ‘Ashura’) may fast, and he who does not want to fast may not fast.” |
